Maybe country had the funk all along—note how Link Wray and “Susie Q” star Dale Hawkins slide into this album’s lineup quite smoothly, reminding us that a little genre one might call “swamp rock” had been giving country sounds an in-the-pocket groove for at least a decade.

THE GUNS: THE GUNS
September 17th, 2012 · 1 Comment
It’s not all introspection: the “Kill Preps” trilogy makes me want to build a time machine, go back to ‘92 and beat all of the yuppies who went to my school with their own golf clubs.
WIZ KHALIFA: I WAS A NINJA TURTLE
May 2nd, 2011 · No Comments
Dressed in a denim blue letterman jacket, a white hoodie emblazoned with the image of James Dean, and red Converse, Wiz Khalifa looks as American as apple pie. After the Venice Beach shoot for ‘Roll Up,’ a single from his upcoming debut album on the label, he talked about Ninja Turtles, the paparazzi, and, of course, women and weed. This interview by Rebecca Haithcoat.
THE HUMMS: DON’T THINK ABOUT DEATH

On the cover of the Humms’ “Don’t Think About Death” 45, singer Zeke Sayer grins like a giant pale-faced mestophalian spider, death in a black hoodie, with a cigarette for a scythe. THE HANDSOME FAMILY: DOWN IN THE MUD
January 26th, 2011 · No Comments
The Handsome Family sees the revival of old-time music as the next step of evolution, like the rediscovery of the washcloth after decades of paper towels. Scattered, the band’s new album of covers and early lost songs, proves the path of the righteous is a country road that appears in your living room and transports you to a place back in time. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
YUK. – A D W A

yuk.’s new tape, A D W A, is an incredibly beautiful ambient electronic album that sends you straight to a THC-infused dreamland in the woods. “adwatxchr” begins the vision quest by inviting you to give yourself to the late-night lo-fi haziness of the wilderness. “emilia reflection” lures you into the ethereal soundscape while the earth melts away entirely.
