FOUR TET + ACTIVE CHILD + NATHAN FAKE @ THE ECHOPLEX
March 3rd, 2010 · No Comments
He layered and looped organic sounds and harmonious melodies, seamlessly creating a hypnotic soundscape. Unlike Fake, Hebden did more than just stand next to his computer banging his head—Hebden’s usual synthesis of acoustic, electric, and digital instruments was enhanced with a lot of nontraditional improvisation, including the use of a tone-generator from his iPhone.
RANDOM PATTERNS @ SYNCHRONICITY SPACE
February 25th, 2010 · No Comments
I know alot of people have been tossing around the word “psychedelic” in descriptions of these dudes—I mean, I just did—but they don’t have any of the cloying spaciness. They’re of a more dusty and adventurous stance. At the end, Chris Frias’ guitar strap comes undone and he’s left smiling, singing and holding his guitar like a rubber chicken. If this was an acid trip, it’d be one with convulsing laughter, climbing trees and rolling on blankets, thinking you’re a dog.
ANDREW BIRD @ BOVARD AUDITORIUM
February 24th, 2010 · 1 Comment
Though he occasionally plays with a full band, on Saturday Bird had a plethora of instruments strapped to him, chimney-sweep-from-Mary-Poppins style, and he strummed and switched them around to perform all his songs as a one-man indie band. A guitar hung from his back as he plucked the violin. There was a keyboard to his left and his ubiquitous double-ended spinning horn behind him. At one point, he removed one shoe to reveal a hot pink sock, the better to peck at his foot pedals with.
MIA DOI TODD RESIDENCY @ SPACELAND
February 23rd, 2010 · 6 Comments
It’s best when someone like Mia Doi Todd is in love, as it fuels the nurturing instinct, and she pours her sweet stuff into songs of earth, morning bed touches, and world peace—her voice round as sunshine in a window turning from dark to light or light to dark—it’s sitting in the window staring at birds or the mailbox, very peaceful-like.

SAINT MOTEL @ THE ROXY
February 19th, 2010 · No Comments
Saint Motel was a fun gig. Their music feels fresh, like poppy seed indie rock and roll with a tenderness towards celery and cucumbers. And then some hot soup. And then a strange hand formed caffeinated cracker that you eat without remembering to chew.
THE CRYSTAL METHOD @ AVALON
February 17th, 2010 · No Comments
By eleven the place was packed with an interesting mix of fancy feminine (heels, short dresses, big earrings, small shirts), hippy trippys (dreadlocks, woven yarn hats, embroidered purses), and people in black, all swarming, dancing, prancing, making eye-contact contact, and then, not so much. I forgot my Molly and colorful lit fingertip gloves but there were enough people with both of these items that the crowd didn’t feel the lack.
