TVOTR, as we all surely know, rules; so too do Arctic Monkeys and Warpaint. We don’t often claim that shows are a must-see but this show is a must-see! If you want to buy tickets from L.A. Phil, go here. But if you are a gambling man or woman and think you might be able to win tickets to go for free, just email rsvp@larecord.com with subject TV and a link to the most ridiculous TV commercial you can find on YouTube Here’s a taste of what you’re in for if you win!

TV ON THE RADIO

Here’s a great live video of the band on Letterman playing the song “Will Do” from their album Nine Types of Light. Sound is solid, performance is pitch-perfect!

WARPAINT

Check out Warpaint playing “Elephant”. Hypnotic vocals, syncopated drums, intricate guitar lines fits together to make a mix of psyche and shoegazery 90s rock and everything in between…

ARCTIC MONKEYS

I wish I had this drummer’s energy. Seriously. Drummers among you, behold the constant 16th notes on the cymbals; guitarists, enjoy the Dick Dale influenced guitar line; everyone else, rock out.

PANDA BEAR

What else but awesomeness could you ever expect from a founding member of Animal Collective?

Basking in the popularity of Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic used an online press conference Tuesday morning to announce that that — unlike most recession-weary arts organizations — it will hold the course.

The orchestra’s 2010-11 season and the Venezuelan’s second as music director will include 12 subscription weeks conducted by Dudamel at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the return of Esa-Pekka Salonen and the premieres of 19 new works, 12 commissioned by the Philharmonic. Two composer-focused festivals, a European tour, new music concerts and an expanded education program will also compete for attention amid dizzying myriad programs and activities. [Read More]

Grizzly Bear “On A Neck, On A Spit”

Shows where rock bands play with the Los Angeles Philharmonic should never be missed. In the last few years, the Phil has played with Air, Belle and Sebastian and The Decemberists, and those nights were nothing short of magical, as you sat under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl with your food and bottles of wine listening to beautiful sounds fill the air. This show had a little different twist; this time the Phil wasn’t playing with the band, but was opening for them playing songs that are similar in sound structure to Grizzly Bear, and instead of the Bowl, the show was at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Phil, led by conductor Joana Carneiro, played three pieces for the event, Boccherini’s Ritirata notturna di Madrid; Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes; and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919), that gave the crowd the opportunity to hear really beautiful music they may not often get a chance to see live in a place they may have never been. Following a 20-minute intermission, Grizzly Bear came on stage to a hero’s welcome and proceeded to play a set relying heavily on its Friends EP, as well as a new song “While You Wait for the Others.” While it was amazing to hear the Phil play live in the building that was made for them, the acoustics seemed to be made for Grizzly Bear tonight, with each piece of atmospheric sound seemingly oozing from the stage and hitting your ears as you sat, trance-like, marveling. By the time the band got to its closer, “He Hit Me,” all you could really do is sit in amazement; I don’t say anything like this ever, but Edward Droste has the voice of an angel, and this band, with its dream-like sound and emotionally-rich textures, just seems to punch you right in the gut upon every listen.

— Alex Roman

Never mind the blog hype–the first time Grizzly Bear entered my mind was when Rory Gilmore name-dropped them in one of her never-ending monologues. And Rory wasn’t lying, either. Grizzly Bear’s harmony-drenched, mid-tempo music unfurls alternately like a dream with sparkling twists and turns around every corner and like traipsing through a forest with neither map nor compass. The acoustic dynamics at Walt Disney Concert Hall should amplify the effect well while stripping those lo-fi moments that occasionally mar the band’s sound. Essa Pekka Salonen and his symphonic cohorts will play opening act in this weird, novel juxtaposition of a night. But don’t expect any Hollywood Bowl-type jamming between orchestra and band; press says never the twain shall meet. Instead, the L.A. Phil will be playing works that inspired the Grizzly Bears themselves and other short pieces that occupy a similar niche, then call it a night. Serious and popular music, side by side, all distinctions between high and low culture swept under the carpet for one magical moment.
