Mary Anne Hobbs does for electronica on her BBC Radio 1 show what John Peel did for everything, and for years now she has been delivering L.A.’s best beatmakers to the world. When she first came to L.A. as a girl, she wore a glitter bikini and drove a motorcycle to Hollywood bars to drink with Megadeth, but tonight she’ll be doing a special DJ set at Low End Theory. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

MONOTONIX: HOW YOU CALL IT? CHUTZPAH!
September 16th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Israel’s Monotonix are known and respected and perhaps even secretly coveted here in L.A. because of their world-wrecking live set and super-charged rock ‘n’ roll. Singer Ami Shalev speaks now while presumably fully clothed. This interview by Rena Kosnett.
THE CONDUCTOR: A TRIP THAT ONE WILLS UPON ONESELF
August 22nd, 2009 · 4 Comments
Nicole Miller’s first solo show mashes a psychedelic video background, a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt and the trope of the orchestral conductor to defy the stability of stereotype. ‘The Conductor’ is absurd, amusing and even frightening at times. This interview by Drew Denny.
NINO MOSCHELLA: SORRY, THIS HAS GOTTEN HEAVY
July 31st, 2009 · 1 Comment
Nino Moschella started out four-tracking funk-soul that sounded like Sly and Shuggie and Stevie in a mountain shack at midnight and exploded into fidelity once he visited the wider world. His newest Boomshadow is out now on Ubiquity. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
YA HO WHA 13: A SPACE AND TIME OUT OF THIS REALITY
June 22nd, 2009 · 2 Comments
Ya Ho Wha 13 were the band formed out of the pre-dawn practice sessions that served also as morning meditation for the Source Family, the L.A.-area religious sect that ran their own health food restaurant during the ‘70s. Drag City has collected nine unreleased songs for this month’s Magnificence in the Memory. This interview by Dan Collins.
THE SONICS: WE MIGHT TRY TO BLOW PEOPLE’S HEADS OFF
June 4th, 2009 · 3 Comments
The Sonics weren’t pioneers so much as cavemen—the first humans to discover tools, fire and the absolute rudiments of chemistry. Their original ‘60s songs still sound wild and feral today, and their debut Here Are The Sonics! devours most of the million punk rock records that timidly followed it. This will be their first Los Angeles-area show ever. This interview by Dan Collins.
CHAIN & THE GANG @ THE SMELL
May 27th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Walking up to the Smell Friday night, I see a slight man with bushy hair and unusually well-tailored casual wear walking a few feet behind. Ian Svenonius walking the streets is just like finding a mint copy of a Beatles Butcher LP in a dollar bin, a serendipitous October surprise. So I asked him how the Chain And The Gang tour was going. He wearily replied, “We’ve been on tour for 43 days, with only two days off. I’m kind of tired, but it’s a good time, I guess.” An honest answer. His newest band, Chain And The Gang, is on tour with The Hive Dwellers, Calvin Johnson of K Records’ new group. While both Ian and Calvin shared the same backing band, the two live experiences varied drastically.
