Thankfully, Aussies’ Cut Copy came to LA’s rescue for a much needed escape from reality with tunes from their latest Zonoscope. It was all about dancing, sweating and some smelling a bit way too funky at the sold out show at The Palladium. Washed Out held their own with sounds from Within and Without. ERASURE + FRANKMUSIK @ PALLADIUM

Erasure

The 80s English synthpop duo Erasure made a return to LA at the sold out Hollywood Palladium. Not only did they play their hits “Sometimes,” “A Little Respect,” “Chains of Love,” and “Oh L’amour,” their new album Tomorrow’s World was well received even though fans haven’t memorized all the words yet. Still, it was a full-on dance party. Andy Bell not only shined like a star and entertained the crowd, his vocals were in top form and never wavered. Vince Clark (founding member of Depeche Mode and member of Yaz) kept a low profile behind the keys and eventually came out on guitar. Bootie LA’s Paul V. ARCTIC MONKEYS + THE VACCINES @ HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM

Arctic Monkeys

It was full-on dance and a little sweat at the Hollywood Palladium Friday night when the Brit bands Arctic Monkeys and The Vaccines (opener) gave exactly what the crowd wanted. Some tunes from Arctic Monkeys’ latest (released June 5) “Suck It and See” were well received, including “The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala” and “Reckless Serenade.” Alex Turner (lead vocals, lead guitar), Jamie Cook (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Nick O’Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Matt Helders (drums, percussion, backing vocals) made their last stop on their tour in LA. BELLE + SEBASTIAN @ HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM

The week before an album release is a weird time to see a band. They can’t not play new material—it’s right there!—yet even in this age of illegal leaks and legal streaming, only a small chunk of the savviest of consumers will have actually heard the record at that point. Glaswegian indie pop all-stars Belle & Sebastian were in exactly that position Sunday night at the Hollywood Palladium, and dealt with the issue in a shrewd, direct manner: by pretty much avoiding the new record entirely.

Despite Belle & Sebastian Write About Love being only nine days away from its “official” stateside release, the set was mainly well-aged favorites (“Judy and the Dream of Horses,” a re-imagined “Piazza, New York Catcher”) and hardcore fan-catering b-sides (“(I Believe In) Travellin’ Light,” “The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner”). The three new songs of the 18-song set came with little fanfare. The band, 12 musicians including a five-piece string section, started things with album opener “I Didn’t See It Coming” as if it had been there all along, and skipped lead single “Write About Love.” Why focus on what they didn’t play, though? The well-rounded set touched on their entire career, with a surprisingly heavy focus on 2003’s Dear Catastrophe Waitress. Each minute of “The Boy with the Arab Strap” imbued the audience—which, according to one eyewitness account, puzzlingly included Korn lead singer Jonathan Davis—with a palpable sense of happiness and appreciation.

Lovingly rendered versions of beautiful songs is only part of the appeal of a Belle & Sebastian concert. It’s also hearing the charming chatter from band leader Stuart Murdoch, here making the not entirely shocking admission that he isn’t a “Vegas guy” (this being one day after the band’s performance at Matador 21) and pondering whether or not inhaling secondhand “grass” smoke from the audience meant he lied to a cop when recently asked if he’s ever taken drugs.

Like their last two LA shows—March 2006 at The Wiltern with The New Pornographers and July 2006 at The Hollywood Bowl with The Shins — B&S paired with an acclaimed, like-minded, North American act. This time around Jenny and Johnny, the latest non-Rilo Kiley Jenny Lewis project, got the nod. In an unsurprising but satisfying moment, Lewis joined the headliners to provide additional vocals on “Lazy Line Painter Jane,” singing the sections originally recorded by the audibly similar Monica Queen.

Spoon’s tight set at the Hollywood Palladium was a true gift to their fans, including tunes from their Soft Effects EP as the first of two encores, appearances by Jon Brion on Cherry Bomb and The Underdog and a full horn section. Frontman Britt Daniel, Jim Eno (drums), Rob Pope (bass) and Eric Harvey (keyboards) continue to forge ahead on the indie rock scene and tonight we got to hop in the car for the ride.
