Concerned event planners are meeting at the L.A. Police Commission at 2:30pm today to have their two minutes of public comment on rumored proposed changes to the L.A. event permitting process. These changes would make it more difficult to put on legitimate and underground events in the city. Here’s more info from the Facebook event page:

The current process takes 30 days to complete for an experienced promoter and costs us anywhere from $300 to $3000. The CID or Commissions Investigation Division is currently proposing for a 90 day turnover, which will make it much harder for you to host both legitimate and underground events while obviously making it take much longer. Not only do we need to pull the permits from 3-4 different agencies but we also have to submit fingerprints on a Live Scan system twice per year and pay a $265 fee for a permit that will now take LAPD 90 days to issue. They want your fingerprints in a national database along with many other entertainment professionals.

Our goal is to inform all affected parties including organizers of 1 night dance events, sound/ lighting companies, security guards, venue managers/ owners, catering services and anyone that the LA City Attorney has taken to court for not having the right permits. We will all be affected by this change. The proposed date of this change is April 1, 2010. After that date it will take over 90 days for you to have a “special event” with the proper permits and it will be much easier for authorities to locate your events (via process of elimination).

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=327397054574

The rave community is naturally very nervous about this. E withdrawal only makes them more emotional.

As everyone who’s read about half of anything I’ve written knows, it makes me sick that Acres of Books is going to be demolished. Knocking Acres over makes no sense at all: Building new lofts when we could be about three weeks from the New Depression? Snuffing out a loved (and solvent) landmark business just because screwy deals drafted decades ago demand it? Removing one of the last unique things that keeps Long Beach from becoming just some by-committee tryhard imitation of Santa Monica?

Of course the city will regret this at some point down the line—probably when people who are barely teenaged now climb into power and wonder what happened to the Long Beach their parents loved, and probably when some think-tank study finally discovers years from now that unrestricted construction of dingbat live-work lofts is about as healthy for a struggling downtown as a neutron bomb. I can almost hear the speeches now, and they sound a lot like the apologies the city had to make for the successive generations of fiasco built and rebuilt on the site that’s now CityPlace. But ideas as bad as this one breed too many bulldozers to stop, so Acres gets plowed under. They close for good Wednesday and the maybe-official wake will be tonight in the back at the last Hobo Alley. Bands will play, hot dogs will be cooked and a lot of respects will be paid. My respects below.

(from Too Thirsty 4 Love on Goner)

Thanks to Echoplex for this one—we are very happy to announce that we will be presenting the unbelievable inconceivable go-absent-without-leave-on-Christmas-eve-able Quintron and Miss Pussycat this Friday at the Echoplex! Quintron is the inventor of the light-operated drum machine called the Drum Buddy (he just sold one to Laurie Anderson!) and an organist extraordinaire, and Miss Pussycat puts on puppet shows that could carry an episode of Captain Kangaroo if Roky Erickson was the guest host. While presiding over New Orlean’s legendary Spellcaster Lodge, they’ve found time to put out a new album Too Thirsty 4 Love (on America’s beloved Goner label!) and it has a giant illegal snake on the cover. If you would like to attend this surely rejuvenative rock ‘n’ roll revival, well, lucky for you we have tickets to give away! All you have to do is answer one simple question:

What did Ignatius J. Reilly sell on the streets of New Orleans? Bonus points for brand name.

And we’ll give you free tickets to this show! The show is 8:30 PM this Friday night at the Echoplex with Golden Triangle and Static Static and costs $12-$14. It is 18+ due to the extreme potential for hedonism.
