WIN TICKETS TO SEE LOW + BACHELORETTE AT THE EL REY!
August 29th, 2011 · No Comments
Low is one of those bands from the 1990s that continue to be–and pretty much always were–absolutely timeless. They self-indentify as “slowcore”, making music that is austere, subdued, and hypnotic. They play with Bachelorette, a.k.a. Annabel Alpers, whose mix of 60s psyche and girl group pop sounds like a computer took a bunch of ecstasy, [...]
BLONDE REDHEAD @ EL REY
July 5th, 2011 · No Comments
Blonde Redhead made a return appearance to LA with an intimate performance at the El Rey. The packed house swayed to the dreamy beats. The trio’s set was stripped down this time around, but all that was needed was the beautiful sound Blonde Redhead creates. Photos from July 2, 2011 by Debi Del Grande.
MAN MAN @ EL REY THEATRE
May 24th, 2011 · No Comments
Man Man (and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) make me want to live in Philly. The sounds these four musical gods create are everywhere, sometimes unexpected, and inevitably dance inducing. Man Man is a group of multi-talented, humorous, unadulteratedly energetic men.
THE BUDOS BAND: NOT REALLY COMMUNIST REVOLUTIONARIES
January 13th, 2011 · No Comments
The Budos Band come from Staten Island but seem like they climbed out of a colossal pile of Ethiopiques comps after strength training from Fela Kuti and inspirational interludes with Dennis Coffey. Their newest album is out now on Daptone and they discuss now their own plans for an impregnable Budos compound. This interview by Jonny Bell of Crystal Antlers.
GARY NUMAN: NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT ME
November 4th, 2010 · No Comments
Before samplers and computer software, Gary Numan came out in eyeliner and white make-up (to cover his zits) and ran a synth through a guitar pedal. His 1979 solo album, The Pleasure Principle, has been sampled by everyone from Wu-Tang to the Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails. Over the last five years, he’s made more noises than he knows what to do with, and he’s finally ready to write another song.
BLITZEN TRAPPER + MOONDOGGIES @ EL REY THEATER
July 3rd, 2010 · No Comments
I found sadness in the fact that only in Los Angeles could a totally likeable band like Blitzen Trapper be burdened with a crowd so boring that it gets outshone by the prospect of being seen in a YouTube video with Rainn Wilson.
BLACK LIPS: I LOST ALL MY ORGANS
January 23rd, 2010 · No Comments
Black Lips have been to or narrowly avoided jail in more countries than many schoolchildren can even locate on a map and they do a ripping cover of Jacques Dutronc. They meet here between time and space to knock out this abridged print interview. Complete interview coming soon—both by Vanessa Gonzalez.
WHITE RABBITS + LOCAL NATIVES @ THE EL REY
November 5th, 2009 · 3 Comments
White Rabbits love percussion. In fact, if you know any of their songs, you probably know “Percussion Gun.” I won’t say that going to a White Rabbits concert is like getting shot in the face with that gun, but maybe bonked over the head with the handle of it, say.
TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS: NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY DISGUST ME
October 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were arguably one of the most feralized bands on the No New York compilation and Lydia Lunch would only penetrate deeper and deeper from there. A one-shot reunion show in New York last year has become a mini-tour that will visit L.A., but after that, says Lunch, it’s done and buried. Brutalization follows. This interview by Chris Ziegler.
