GIL SCOTT-HERON @ EL REY THEATRE

October 8th, 2009 · No Comments

The first minute of a new day began at 9PM, when ecstatic emotions surged El Rey as Gil Scott-Heron strolled on stage. The event felt like a rarity—experiencing jazz, poetry and hip hop as it was fused decades earlier, but as Heron said, his music is living music; a non genre sound evident in the varied faces packing the house.

TAR FEST @ EL REY THEATRE

October 7th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Silverlake, 2008 moved to the El Rey Theatre for a night and they brought visuals with them for the Tar Fest. The three bands on the lineup all showed that they not only are up to the challenge of performing at the larger venues, they also know how to make use of the additional space, sight and sound.

BLITZEN TRAPPER @ EL REY THEATRE

October 6th, 2009 · No Comments

It wasn’t just the appearance of this husky crew that made them seem out of place in the chandeliered El Rey—the nature of their music simply belongs in the backwoods of Oregon. The state was mentioned as the inspiration behind several of their songs (”This one’s about a river in Oregon;” “We found this song in an Oregon forest;” “We were thinking about the roller skating rink back home”).

THE DODOS @ EL REY THEATRE

And then, about five songs into a rather mechanical live show, they surprised us with a burst of energy and actual concert versions of “In The Fire” and “Jodi.”

AS TALL AS LIONS @ EL REY THEATRE

September 1st, 2009 · No Comments

As Tall As Lions were opening the show and I suspected most of the people in attendance were not there to see them as I looked around at the sea of Rx Bandits and Dredg T-shirts. The lights dimmed and there was movement behind the stage curtains. Cue the reveal and As Tall As Lions launched into their first song, one that slowly simmered with a strong drum and bass core while the other instruments and vocals were added in layers.

AMANDA BLANK + MATT & KIM @ EL REY THEATRE

August 31st, 2009 · No Comments

Smooth pelvic lyrical repetition. A tiny black plastic hooded cape. Crouching down in six inch suede boots, dark curly mane curtaining her face, Amanda Blank told us she was hot up on stage, but we already knew that. To finish off her first song, her DJ went silent and she whispered into the microphone, “Get inside me.”

AU REVOIR SIMONE: HER SYNTH IS A CHIMPANZEE

June 11th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Erika Forster, Annie Hart, and Heather D’Angelo comprise Au Revoir Simone, a sweet but mighty choral of harmonies, keys, and enviable bangs. They’ve also got a fresh new album, Still Light, Still Bright, and good vibes to spare. On their way crossing the West Texas desert to Los Angeles, we spoke with Erika on the phone. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
