THE SONICS + THEE MIDNITERS + CRYSTAL ANTLERS @ THE ROXY

August 16th, 2014 · No Comments

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande There were many options Friday night for your live listening pleasure. But when a legendary band that you’ve never seen before is playing, you go. A group from Tacoma, WA that started in 1963 and paved the way for so many bands for a garage rock sound that is fast and ferocious shook The Roxy’s walls. Age and time has not affected their sound a bit – a tad louder maybe. No one I spoke to had ever seen The Sonics play in LA (have they ever?), so it was a special treat to hear the band (including three original members) rock better than most bands in their 20s. The crowd was a mix of all ages…

August 5th, 2013 · No Comments

Photos by Mary Bell. Words by Tiffany Semoy Davy Lolipop records recently opened its doors this past month and already amazing things are coming out of this great grouping of people that come together for nothing else but the love of music. Wild Pack of Canaries held its record release show for Agua Amargo at LA volunteer run The Smell, along with Crystal Antlers, Electric Magpie and Your Ugly Sister.

De Anda, Bendzinski, Ibarra, Hernandez, and Vazquez recently finished recording their third, full length album in Long Beach and were ripe to give the crowd at sweaty venue a taste of the jams on their latest cassette. July 14th, 2013 · 1 Comment

Photos and words by Mary Bell Seems like all of Long Beach was at 4th Street Vine Saturday night to celebrate the art opening of Emily Maddigan’s Memorable Mounts. Just outside the bar all your needs could be met from shopping for vinyl at the LA Record Truck, to feasting on Wood-Fired Pizza from Dustin Lovelis and free ice cream treats from Ice Cream Ian. Setlist: CALIFORNIA PRAY RATTLESNAKE LICORICE PIZZA SUMMER…

L.A. RECORD THROWS OPEN THE ARCHIVES FOR L.A. ZINE FEST!

February 17th, 2012 · 4 Comments

L.A. RECORD’s gangly adolescence We spent hours last night battling through our secret archive—one a storage unit, now something between a firetrap and a choking hazard—to fish out whatever relics we could from six years of publishing this crazy thing. And we actually found … a lot? But not a lot of a lot. L.A. RECORD flies by night always, and our archives have gone through several apartments, Volvo trunks, storage units, floods and spasms of unavoidable but hilarious catastrophe, so sadly they aren’t complete. But they’re more complete than we thought! So—in honor of the amazing L.A. ZINE FEST, we’ll be bringing out some L.A. RECORD-type things that haven’t seen the light of day for years. If you ever missed an issue—or a…
