TRACK PREMIERE: É ARENAS “MEREZCO MAS”

December 21st, 2018

The best presents are the ones that are truly a surprise—as well as the ones that were made by hand!—and É Arenas just showed up with both at once! Arenas is already known to L.A. RECORD readers both for his crucial work with Chicano Batman and with his outstanding solo songs as well—like his firestarting Mar Iguana EP from early this year—and this new "Merezco Mas" ("I Deserve More") came together in a burst of up-all-night energy just this very morning. It's a reminder about what matters most during the holidays, written in a flash of cosmic inspiration.

TRACK PREMIERE: RUDY DE ANDA “HELADO”

February 8th, 2018

L.A. RECORD alum Rudy De Andaread his classic hat-vs.-freeway anecdote here!—gives us this brand new song to kick off his quickie west coast tour with sci-fi scion Adan Jodorowsky that starts next week and includes a stop at L.A.'s Zebulon on Tue., Feb. 20, with Carlos Nino DJing. (Get tickets here!) "Helado" is a sweet dream of a song with De Anda's characteristically nimble guitar, just-perfect synthesizer by Bardo Martinez of Chicano Batman, propulsive percussion by Edgar "Meshlee" Modesto of Buyepongo and guest vocals by Gemma Castro, and you can explore her solo work here.

É ARENAS: MAR IGUANA EP

February 2nd, 2018

The title track is full of electronic squelches, sizzling Casio melodies, and an un-subtle cough or two in the back—it’s the kind of playful, polymorphic tune that could work wonderfully in a downtown warehouse DJ set or at an Echo Park house party. (Either way, you’re dancing.)

EP PREMIERE: É ARENAS “MAR IGUANA” + “EL NOPALITO”

January 23rd, 2018

L.A. RECORD is honored to premiere the new 45 from É Arenas, bassist of the mighty Chicano Batman and producer (for Brainstory and more) and righteous solo artist, too. If you missed his full-length debut Nariz in 2016, you should go track that down—but first you should listen to "Mar Iguana," a hot-to-the-touch surreal-yet-real story about (says Arenas) a "marine iguana who loves to smoke weed but is worried about his friends locked-up for weed-related crimes even though California recently legalized the use of recreational marijuana.” It's bristling with cosmic synthesizer and bursting with energy, inspired by the breakneck quebradita music and dance Arenas remembers from backyard parties as a kid. B-side "El Nopalito" is maybe a little less manic but no less irresistible, and Arenas and band will be celebrating its release on February 2 with sci-fi future-funkers Chola Orange and Big Fun at the Moroccan Lounge downtown!
