I stood dead center ready to die, since the crowd was fully vicious. I rolled with the punches even though I hadn’t slept in days, and walked through Echo Park all day long (I don’t know why)—until someone poured a full glass of beer directly on my face and punched me immediately after. I took this as a hint that I should step back a little bit and let the crazy kids kill one another adoringly.

FYF gave us an amazingly line-up: Cold Showers, Catwalk, Austra, and Vivian Girls. This was Vivian Girls’ of Brooklyn’s first show in L.A. in over a year, according to bassist/vocalist Katy Goodman, so the show was crowded with devoted fans. The Smell usually offers $5 shows and, despite the raised price of $8, this one sold out quickly.

When I drive through Oxnard, CA, I think of many things, but one thing that would have never crossed my mind is a thriving indie and twee pop scene. There are quite a few bands just north of us, quietly making a name for themselves and existing in their own musical bio-dome where the rules, trends and fashion that can weigh down many Los Angeles bands don’t apply.
