It’s been said that Uphill Gardeners represent some kind of No Wave by way of Los Angeles, but No Wave always seems like such a New York thing that it comes off as slightly disingenuous to assign them that signifier when they’ve got so much happening on their own merits. Primitive disorienting art rock might be a better way to put it; “moody noise noir” might make even more sense, but only time will tell.

SOFT PACK + WAVVES + BEST COAST + GANGLIANS @ ECHOPLEX
October 20th, 2009 · No Comments
Some joker even tried to mosh and was TAKEN DOWN by a bespectacled gent half his size. It was beautiful like National Geographic. Soft Pack drummer Brian plays with just as much originality and abandon as Moe Tucker, putting a jerry-rigged cocktail kit being through its paces with equal parts precision and ferocity. These guys were tight, telepathic and tuned in. I‘ve felt the same kind of tranquil delirium out on the ocean surrounded by surfers—me sponging on my boogie board—when it all just makes sense. Kids were dancing on the side of the stage, in front of it, on top of it… No poses, no frills, just rock.
60 WATT KID + RANDOM PATTERNS + BOBB BRUNO
October 1st, 2009 · No Comments
The Patterns banged loudly against each other with staccato, tinny thuds. Some issued viscous sighs as they sucked smaller pieces through themselves. Others, wedged against a million frenetic polygons, belched victorious brass shouts as they pushed their way back into the whirlwind. The boy was overcome. The Random Patterns would slow their circuit periodically, and he would be deceived into thinking the crush of color and sound was over, but then the pounding, melodious, buzzing, sizzling tornado would begin anew.
BEST COAST + PEARL HARBOR @ L’KEG GALLERY
August 13th, 2009 · No Comments
Pearl Harbor’s music is one that connotes taking the most awesome sailboat trip of your life in the marina where Dennis Wilson drowned. Somehow his spirit floats to the top and incarnates itself into these rather young-looking purveyors who have based themselves upon that familiar sound.

Best Coast is Bethany once from Pocahaunted (and the fearsomely classic Pocahaunted interview—apparently she has now made peace with the ocean she once hated?) and Bobb Bruno making fuzz in the sun and they will be performing at Saturday’s Beach Dazed festival with RJD2, Busdriver and more.
