With the evangelical flailing of arms and stomping of feet, plus the whole shirtless, long-hair-and-beard thing going on, there were moments where I wondered if we weren’t actually being converted to Magnetic Zeroism. Not that I would mind—

For the first half of the concert, we might as well have just put on their album and stood facing forward in a large room together. Meric Long (vocals, guitar), Logan Kroeber (drums), and Keaton Snyder (vibraphone) are such impressively precise players, that even when Long’s guitar string broke, it seemed rehearsed. And then, about five songs into a rather mechanical live show, they surprised us with a burst of energy and actual concert versions of “In The Fire” and “Jodi.”

Looking at the sprightly little thing, you wonder how, at just 21, she got to this point: touring with a guitar strap made from a couple pieces of yarn and drum ensembles that include upside-down bottles and tin cans, wearing oversized t-shirts with shapes painted on them, in front of a venue full of mesmerized fans. If this is where she is now, what was she doing at an age when I was busy putting glitter nail polish on my toes? Well, it turns out she was being classically trained, which makes the crazy sounds she now emits make sense as music.
