L.A.’s drunk-punk scene wouldn’t be the same without Blaque Chris, and since everybody else and their dad is opining about their favorite albums of the decade on our site, we figured, hey, why not Chris?

KYLE MABSON’S BIRTHDAY @ PEHRSPACE
February 5th, 2010 · No Comments
On Monday, Sean hosted a birthday rager for Kyle Mabson, his roommate and the official party engine of Pehrspace. A double-sized crowd appeared to celebrate Kyle’s special day and check out a solid-from-top-to-bottom lineup of performers that was headlined by Abe Vigoda. Sure, there were still people in the parking lot—but that’s only because the venue was too sweaty and insane for their sensibilities.

THE RAINCOATS: YOU NEED TO HAVE A BIT OF CHEEK
October 11th, 2009 · No Comments
The girls in the Raincoats have covered the Monks, but didn’t originally know the Monks possibly because they were so much like the Monks—formed perfectly from nothing and destined to disappear too quickly and leave anyone who discovered them later wondering how they’d ever happened in the first place. They play their first-ever Los Angeles show on October 11 at the Part Time Punks fest. This interview by Kevin Ferguson.
LIVE AT THE SMELL @ THE DOWNTOWN INDEPENDENT
September 1st, 2009 · No Comments
Some volume issues during a performance on screen render the crowd restless. Murmurs ripple through, speculating and questioning.
“Can’t hear a fucking thing!” cuts through the darkness, crass and unconstructive.
“Well, you should’ve been there!” retorts another faceless voice, more lighthearted. By the end of the film, he couldn’t have been more right.

NITE JEWEL + ABE VIGODA + BLUE JUNGLE @ THE SMELL
June 16th, 2009 · 5 Comments
Nite Jewel stands built of bass, drum machine and synths, converting the heat of the crowd into energy as they go nuclear without all the messier consequence of things like mutant babies. The rhythms and melodies here are vaguely Afro-Cuban; humid white man’s funk in a world of—at best—grey and at worst, light beige. Ramona Gonzalez’s and Emily Jane’s voices float over the fringes and their beats descend like visitors from planets much more interesting than this one.
TELEPATHE: CAN I HAVE A BLOBAR?
June 12th, 2009 · 3 Comments
It’s good to admire Kate Bush. Telepathe knows what’s up, and while they’re not ‘Wuthering Heights’ anywhere, the girls throw down a dance number in their ‘So Fine’ music video. Cross-breed Bush with Dre and a little Byrne and chop until you’ve got a whole new mutant, and that will make Melissa Livaudais and Busy Gangnes a pair of happy mother fuckers. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
NOSAJ THING: YOU DROPPED THE BOMB ON ME
June 8th, 2009 · 2 Comments
Nosaj Thing was in 40 Bands 80 Minutes with Wives, HEALTH and Abe Vigoda and then followed madman visionaries like Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer to Low End Theory. He now joins half the next generation of L.A. beatmakers on Daddy Kev’s Alpha Pup Records with his debut full-length Drift. This interview by Chris Ziegler
