RISE FOR FREE WITH EMILY LACY

It’s easy to imagine Emily Lacy living inside of a giant old tree, and fairies come to her for wisdom about saving the world. For the past few months, Lacy has been rallying for the revolution with her Occupy shows in town, and she’s teamed up with producer Scott Barber to put it on virtual wax. Opening song “Beat” reveals she’s riled up with some psychedelic details and plenty reverb. The big tree she lives in, it has great natural reverb chambers. Flowers bloom out of its cracks when the sound escapes. “Country” is a catchy battle cry. “Riches” encompasses with guitars while “Rise” digs its fingers into some beautiful feedback as Lacy wails like a proto-punker. Stylistically, “America” and “Goodbye” will please fans of her meditative album Country Singer. And although the art is priceless, you can download the EP Rise for free. Whether you’re into the politics or not, this is fucking good and inspiring. Lacy is a true folk artist, whether she’s strumming a guitar or manipulating frequencies on a machine, she makes the people’s music. This EP is most literally “for the people,” the first of a proposed Occupy Trilogy by Ms. Lacy. Her musical message is unselfish, personal and universal. We ain’t in Greenwich Village and she ain’t really a hippie, but I’m going to go burn my bra now.

Random Patterns reveals new songs and there’s cowbell involved. Known for its parts and progressions and long jams, the band explores (or records) itself in a new way here on “Cans All Day.” The wall of noise is clearer, more like a window. That’s just a warm-up for “Raw Luck,” a really cool Random Patterns experience. It’s full of nice smooth contrasts. Something pretty in the melody comes at you quickly and strangely, like it’s leaking. …Scales.

MERLE HAGGARD “WORKING IN TENNESSEE”

Merle Haggard is putting out a new album this October with Vanguard Records. Below, get a free download of the title track, “Working In Tennessee,” an upbeat, happy, swinging tune that sounds grudge-free but, according to the official document, “underscores Haggard’s oft-confrontational relationship with Music City.” Haggard is loved, afterall, for his simple way of confronting things he doesn’t like—as candidly or poetically as he pleases. Has he gotten softer rather than harder as he wrinkles with time? Perhaps, but there’s always some remark somewhere on the album that’s 100% Merle badass. We look forward to it!

Working In Tennessee features a variety of tempos and styles from different times he’s perhaps revisiting in his record collection, as well as appearances by his family and a few of Willie Nelson’s family members. Haggard’s wife joins him on a cover of “Jackson.”

It’s interesting to see the ways people are exploring the meeting point of folk and classical instruments. Here’s a banjo and a string section. His new album is called The Jessamine County Book Of The Living. Matt Bauer dips into the hauntedness of things, so a “Blacklight Horse” is probably not a purple glowing stallion at a rave. Julia Holter went to Canada with Dublab for a week to immerse them canucks in Tonalism, a night-long ambient music experience. She says, “I hastily ditched my microkorg plan last minute and decided to try out my songs on the church piano instead. At 4am.” Here, in audio form, is what she showed them.
