LIAM GALLAGHER + RICHARD ASHCROFT @ THE GREEK THEATRE
Two Britpop legends took over the Greek Theatre stage for an evening of reflections from the past and a glimpse of the future.
Former frontman of the Verve Richard Ashcroft had quite a different set than The Wiltern show last year. Standing solo with his acoustic guitar and a tad more hair, Ashcroft only needed his distinct pipes to win the crowd over with stripped down versions of Verve songs, including “Lucky Man,” “Sonnet,” and the heart-wrenching “The Drugs Don’t Work” that had most of us singing along. Although not many of us had heard “Paradise” from Human Conditions, Ashcroft dedicated it to his late Nan Lillian who loved the song and he last played at her funeral. He joked that she’s probably sick of hearing it now. The set with “Bitter Sweet Symphony” and there was mention of a new album out in August.
Oasis fans went into a complete frenzy as soon as Liam Gallagher walked onto the stage. Guys at the rail proudly held a banner “As You Were,” which is the title of Gallagher’s album and his constant Twitter mantra. He opened with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” walked up to fans at the front, touching hands, nodding in appreciation. Gallagher has seemed to find a perfect groove of playing his own songs as well as Oasis gems.
