Before Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real took the stage, women argued for spaces at the rail to be close to Nelson, the young rising musician and son of Willie Nelson. Donning a Tom Petty-styled top hat, glasses and black coat, Nelson walked on stage with his talented band (who happened to back Neil Young) and dove right into “American Girl.” It was a touching and fitting tribute.
Most of the set consisted of songs off the new self-titled release. Nelson showcased his guitar wielding abilities, especially on songs like “Forget About Georgia,” where he played the solo with his teeth, and “Set Me Down On A Cloud” with its howling guitar solo. Nelson gave his bandmates a break halfway into the show and played the sweet and soothing “Just Outside of Austin” on his acoustic. Nelson also threw in a Doors cover of “LA Woman.”
