The Record Company’s homecoming show at the Fonda Theatre was met with as much passion in the crowd as the band produced onstage. The L.A. trio of multi-instrumentalists roared to life with its trademark sound that combines blues and rock and punk.
The Record Company could also slow things down, as frontman Chris Vos led the band into the soulful and seductive “Rita Mae Young” while on the slide guitar. An acoustic section highlighted by “This Crooked City” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” showcased the band’s softer side, while a rather inspired and raucous version of “So What’cha Want” by the Beastie Boys saw The Record Company at its most humorous.
The Brothers Comatose proved to be the perfect band for Saturday’s rousing hoe-down. The bluegrass outfit slayed its opening set and mixed in a few inspired covers that included Queens of the Stone Age and The Zutons.
