SKATING POLLY + STARCRAWLER + GAL PALS @ THE BOOTLEG
When legendary DJ and master of new and cool music Rodney Bingenheimer signed off for his final ‘Rodney on the ROQ’ show early Monday morning, he had quite the final playlist. And on that list, was Skating Polly’s “Louder in Outer Space” off their new EP New Trick featuring Louise Post and Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt.
Peyton Bighorse and Kelli Mayo have recruited Kelli’s brother Kurtis to make Skating Polly a powerhouse trio. It’s a rare treat when SP comes to town, so no surprise The Bootleg bar stage area was filled with familiar faces. Speaking of “Louder in Outer Space,” Peyton showcases her exceptional vocals on this track. With Kurtis beasting on the drums, you can really appreciate the exceptional vocals and guitar playing between the stepsisters as they finally stand at the front together. Kelli’s uninhibited spirit is infectious as she shreds and sings. Towards the end of the set, Kurtis took over on guitar and Peyton took over the drums. And someone fucked up a knock knock joke, but we won’t say who. After supporting X, Babes In Toyland, L-7, Band of Horses, Deerhoof, Kate Nash (who was in the front rocking out), Wavves, Mike Watt, and more, it’s due time they are headliners. I mean, can you imagine when they are all 21 and over?!
It’s rare occurrence when you watch a band and just have a feeling they won’t be playing that tiny of a space for very long. Starcrawler featuring dynamic vocalist Arrow de Wilde, wild guitarist Henri Cash, Austin Smith on drums and bassist Tim Franco create not only a hard rocking good time, but evoke visual sensations that one must be present to get. Their single “Ants” is a must listen.
A duo you will be seeing around town is Gal Pals, originally from Austin. Lauren Marie Mikus and Jillian Talley played a short, but sweet set to get everyone moving.
