Life isn’t all about rainbows, confetti, balloons and unicorns. Unless you happen to be spending the evening with The Flaming Lips. Giant balloons bounced around inside the cavernous Ace Theatre in DTLA while frontman Wayne Coyne and his band put on quite the spectacle rivaling a three-ring circus, as part of their tour in support of the new album Oczy Mlody.
They kicked off the celebration with the uplifting “Race for the Prize” and wasted no time firing confetti into the air, creating a flurry of excitement. The inflatable characters came out on stage as they performed “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1.” Just when you thought the absurdity couldn’t be surpassed, Coyne emerges from the stage wearing rainbow colored angel wings as he’s riding a luminescent unicorn while singing “There Should Be Unicorns.” Other highlights of the evening included their cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Coyne’s obligatory crowdsurfing session in his giant ball.
Dutch indie rockers Klangstof warmed up the audience with a few of their songs including the enchanting song “Hostage”.
