Anna Bulbrook (the Bulls | the Airborne Toxic Event | Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) has outdone herself and should be proud as founder of GIRLSCHOOL. The three-day festival of women-led bands and presentations with quality speakers is gaining momentum. This year’s soiree benefited Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls LA!
GIRLSCHOOL 2017 brought some sensational talent that took over The Bootleg. On the first evening, journalist Eva Barlow spoke with Shirley Manson about her career, the challenges of being a female artist, gender politics, and aging.
“We’re living in very very different times, and there’s a huge movement against women globally, and it’s terrifying. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to come here tonight. I’m not a great believer in all female enclaves. I want us fucking playing in the big pool. I don’t want us relegated to little pools. You know? I don’t want an all-female stage at a music festival. I want on the main stage along with everybody else. You know? However, these are really brutal times and as a result I’m here because I believe we have to be here. Women have to have each other’s backs and we have to galvanize and we have to push back.”
