X + LOS LOBOS + THE BLASTERS + LP3 AND THE TRAGEDY @ THE NOVO THEATRE
Photos and recap by Leslie Kalohi
Legendary bands X, Los Lobos, and The Blasters came together for some special Southern California shows for the Cinco de Mayo week. The “Tres Bandas Compańeros” hit L.A. for an all-night party at The Novo that raged well into the early morning hours.
Taking the stage at 12:30am, the fans for X were still in good spirits, with most waiting against the stage barrier for the beloved L.A. band for well over 4 hours. The band has been enjoying the return of Billy Zoom, who was all smiles for the night. X’s set that kicked off with the feverish “The Once Over Twice” and later included the classic battle cry, “Los Angeles.”
Los Lobos brought its rich musical background and time spent in Boyle Heights for a rousing, career-spanning set. The band would end on its unforgettable version of “La Bamba” along with a cover of “Good Lovin’.”
Old school rockabilly was served courtesy of The Blasters, with the band’s classic “Dark Night” highlighting an infectious, toe-tapping set.
Opening the night was LP3 and The Tragedy, perfectly honing a sound and attitude influenced by all the bands that would play later in the evening.
