THE RENTALS + WE ARE SCIENTISTS @ THE FONDA THEATRE
Photos and words by Samantha Saturday
With The Rentals' return to Los Angeles after a seven year absence, Matt Sharp took a minute mid-set to reflect on his emotional connection with music from Black Sabbath, The Cure, and Lucius. Like the artists he mentioned, Sharp has remained a beloved indie figurehead with whatever he does. For one night only, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius fulfilled their vocal parts on tunes from Lost in Alphaville throughout the show. With an ever fluctuating lineup, The Rentals are currently an amalgamation of musicians that have no doubt been influenced by Sharp’s career – Keith Murray of We Are Scientists, Lauren Chipman of The Section Quartet, Ryen Slegr of Ozma (who opened), and Shawn Glassford of STRFKR. As if hearing old favorites like “The Man With Two Brains” and “Waiting” wasn’t enough to fill our nostalgic little hearts, The Rentals capped of their encore by melding “Pop Muzik” by M and the Ghostbusters theme into “Friends of P”, with Sharp, Wolfe, and Laessig traversing the crowd. With the new album, Sharp and The Rentals are clearly looking toward the future.
We Are Scientists:
Several months ago, We Are Scientists brought up their own special guest at The Troubadour that threw the place into a joyous singalong. That guest was Matt Sharp. Clearly longtime pals, it couldn’t have felt better than to have the trio provide support for the tour, especially with Keith Murray filling in on guitar for The Rentals.
