The anticipation and excitement of hearing live one of the most unique musicians of the 80s was felt inside and outside the Mayan Theatre last night. Adam Ant has returned to LA after 17 years and the timing couldn’t have been better. The line at the merch table seemed miles long and fans dressed to impress.

As the avant-garde artist took the stage dressed in pirate regalia, I really hope he felt the warmth and embrace from the packed house as the applause and screams were deafening. What happened after that was a two-hour punk/rock/pop escape into Ant’s world filled with music deep in his back catalog. “Ant People” were giddy as they sang every word to every song. “Beat My Guest,” “Whip In My Valise,” and the new song “Vince Taylor” from his upcoming Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter are gems that Ant has created, molded and produced as treasures for us to enjoy. Ant’s music doesn’t even sound dated. It’s something that sounds so refreshing and new. His solid and sexy band The Good, the Mad and the Lovely Posse complete with two drummers fit him well and never over-power his voice, which is in top form. One of the highlights was “Wonderful,” which was so beautiful and shows the range that Ant embodies. Sure, everyone knows the hit “Goody Two Shoes,” but to be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to that one. I wanted edgy, dark, sexy, and risky songs and was not disappointed. The charismatic, confident and engaging man still has that mystery about him, which is probably why he left the stage quietly without a word. And poof, he’s gone again.

Adam Ant is playing this Saturday in San Diego at 4th and B, October 19th in Ventura, and October 20 at the Grove of Anaheim.

What a splendid triumph for Adam to “nail it” in the heart of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles after a 15 year absence from the American stage. His film and television acting career in Hollywood never gave him the opportunity to truly display his considerable acting talent. He did make a few compelling films and guest artist appearances in TV, but for the most part – the Hollywood scripts he was given were not worth his little finger.

“Love Bites” was adorable – “Drop Dead Rock” was a snooze fest the first 45 minutes – just fast forward the DVD – but the scenes with Adam Ant and Deborah Harry were scintillating. His better work was in “Equalizer” “Northern Exposure” and “Tales from the Crypt.”

I am glad he left Hollywood and set aside his acting career to get his personal demons expunged. Working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles is tanatamount to taking a boat ride down the sewer in a glass bottom boat. When I was a little punk rock girl in the 1970′s, I lived in West Hollywood. I used to work in the music and film industry – and it BLOWS! I’m glad he had the good sense to leave it behind.

He has always been and will always remain at heart – a punk musician. Considering he’s pushing 60, he’s in fine form, fit as a fiddle, looking trim and frisky. So happy to learn his L.A. debut for the North American tour was smokin’ – haven’t seen any You Tube clips yet of that performance – but judging from the photos of Adam and the elated expression of Ant People at that concert – it seems the event was world class.

The set list is an excellent compilation of his best work and I’m thrilled to pieces that I will see him in San Francisco October 18th. Hope he is sticking to the same set list for S.F. I’m a laid-off, unemployed teacher – 30% of K-12 public schools were shut down by the govt in Sacramento. The State of California would rather just build more prisons and doesn’t seem to care about eduacting our youth.

It was worth scrimping and saving my pennies for many months to come up with the scratch to see Adam live in SF on October 13th. No way I’m able to cough up $312.00 for the “VIP Private Meet & Greet” – but maybe I’ll get lucky and see Lord Sexitude, His Holy Hotness earlier in the day when the roadies and musicians enter the theatre to set up and do the sound check. I’m sure he is still going to be JUST as gracious and accomodating to Ant People who cannot pay $312.00 for a nano-second “Hello, Photo Snap, Handshake, Autograph, NEXT”. I doubt that “private” event will be worth it – he’s sure to be surrounded by a flotilla of handlers, bodyguards, security – to keep the wing-nuts away from him.

Hope he can still find a bit of time to schmooze with the Hoi Polloi, the plebians, the rabble, the Great Unwashed outside the theatre – for the 99% who don’t have big bucks to meet him.

He’s on a punishing, grueling schedule – a different city every day – touring across the country. During his recovery and later in his remission from Bipolar illness he spoke eloquently about the importance of needing to pace himself, sufficient rest, vacation, nutritious diet while touring. He has learned the hard way how to pace himself – so I just all goes well with a break-neck touring schedule in North America.
Having gone through his hard earned fortune, due to many years of unemployment while he overcame severe bipolar illness – for 7 years he didn’t touch a guitar, couldn’t write a line of lyrics and was in severe emotional torment while sorting out bipolar issues – then the 5 years he took off from work to be a “House Dad” Mr. Mom as a devoted father – a divorce in which he generously gave his ex a decent settlement since he is an old fashioned gentleman…..He went through all his money and now has to build up his equity from
scratch – hence he’s charging a whopping $312.00 for “Private VIP Meet & Greet” in select cities.

He’s always been thoroughly down to earth and incredibly sweet and nice to his fans at concerts – signing autographs and allowing gushing, drooling fan girls to snap pix of him with fans. His kindness to fans is legendary.

I suppose socking the posh toffs who comprise the 1% with a $312.00 “Private VIP Meet & Greet” is how he’s going to finance his retirement fund and his teenage daughter’s college education. More power to him!

That being said – for over 35 years I have fantasized about doing UNSPEAKABLE things to him.

I want to Adam His Ant. But that’s out of the question since he can easily hook up with nubile maidens in their mid-20′s….he still looks fresh as a daisy, proud as a peacock – his pure male pulchritude is remarkably natural…he doesn’t look like his face is pumped full of Botox unlike every other two bit Hollywood celebrity. His countenance has an almost child like beauty in his androgynous facial features – even at 57 years old.
