I had a lot of questions going into the Big Black Delta show at Bootleg Theatre. Would BBD be up to snuff after returning from their busy summer tour playing with both M83 and Jane’s Addiction? Would new drummer Will Love rock as hard as former BBD drummer Amy Wood (who was scooped up to tour with Fiona Apple)? Would LA music fans turn out to welcome home their synthen-stein fellow-Angeleno? The answer to all of those questions is yes. The tour seems only to have galvanized BBD’s already tight sound. Love delivers hard hits and crazy precision. And LA threw a homecoming party like one you might see in the movies. Fans rushed the stage to dance, hug, tumble, and sing along with front-man Jonathan Bates. And in case you were wondering if BBD can play without its track – the answer to that question is yes, too. And it rocks. During the final song of the night, Bates leapt on top of some gear, kicking out the tracked audio for their hit “IFUCKINGLOVEYOU.” Dueling drummers Love and Mahsa Zargaran smashed on, and the frenzied crowd belted the rest of the song unplugged with Bates leading the charge. Electro-rock band Battle Tapes and art-pop band Omniflux (fronted by BBD’s Zargaran and also sporting killer dueling drummers) set the night spinning with opening sets.
