Desperate fans and scalpers questioned the long line of people entering the Fonda Theatre on Monday night, hoping one might have an extra ticket to spare at an agreeable price.
It had been nearly two years since UK’s The XX graced the stage for their dedicated LA fans, a fact acknowledged early on by frontman/bassist Oliver Sim when he addressed the crowd shortly after playing latest single, “Angels.”
The band was mum on words for the majority of the evening, instead relaying on the sophisticated light and laser display to enhance the music, with a large, Plexiglas “X” being the main focal point on stage. The visuals worked well on many levels to highlight the group’s sound, evoking an ethereal dream for frontwoman/guitarist Romy Madley Croft’s vocals or mysteriously masking Sim when he took the lead instead. The XX delivered a solid set of songs from their 2009 self-titled debut, as well as treating the audience to new tracks from the upcoming release, Coexist.
Before the evening came to the close, Madley Croft made sure to thank the audience for continuing to support the band during the absence away while completing the new record.
LA-based sister trio Haim were added as last minute openers for the evening.
