We last caught our hometown sextet Races at The Echo for its record release party for Year of the Witch. This time around, the band brought its ethereal blend of psych-rock to The Troubadour. Dreamy elements of indie-pop, and beautiful harmonies served up by vocalists Wade Ryff and Devon Lee characterize the Races’ sound. But under the lyrical sheen and psychedelic vibe, lies a rich sonic bedrock provided by Oliver Hild (Bass/Moog) and Lucas Ventura (Drums). Locked and groovy, the pair sorted rhythm and provided the warm color and rich harmonics. Opening act Lily Haydn joined the band on stage with her violin for one of the evenings many highlights. Another, was the choice of fan fave, “Lies” as the closer.
Setting up for Races was near show-stealer, Gliss, with a unique blend of moody, percussion-led, dark pop music. Photos by Justin Wise.
