“Listen, I’ve been drinking,” muttered Dan Bejar as his band Destroyer concluded the evening’s performance at the El Rey with the meandering track, “Bay of Pigs.” Pulling swigs from a couple of beer bottles and a red solo cup on stage, Bejar had indeed been drinking. But, the drinks were more of a lubricant for a well-oiled machine than a hindrance. Destroyer didn’t take any risks or have much stage presence, but that would be outside the band’s persona. Each of the 8 band members on stage played its role perfectly; the set was solid, the bass groovy, timing impeccable. Sandro Perri opened. Photos by Andrew Hanson.
