Driving downtown to beat the rain and obtain a prime parking spot were not the only perks of arriving at The Mayan early. Catching openers Big Black Delta and A Place to Bury Strangers was a must.
The stage was almost completely dark for the electronic solo project of local Jonathan Bates (Mellowdrone) who has gained popularity opening for M83. Bates’ voice was strong as the darker synth sounds took over the venue.
It’s been awhile since A Place to Bury Strangers has brought its intense sound to LA, but with the solid EP release Onwards To The Wall, including the new single “So Far Away,” it was damn time. The stage continued to be dark, which is probably why I didn’t notice bassist Dion Lunadon jump down in the photo pit and accidentally slam me in the back. But it was ok as I was completely lost in the sound that is always loud, always electric.
The stage lights were now on for the Welsh trio The Joy Formidable. Although lead singer and guitarist Ritzy Bryan is beyond adorable, don’t let her smile fool you. The girl can rock. With only one album under its belt, the indie rock band has gained a strong and loyal following. It’s always fun to watch Bryan and Rhydian Dafydd (bass/backing vocals) feed off of each other. Bryan announced the band is going away to finish up its new album in Portland, Maine. Luckily, we were treated to a new song from that newbie, “Silent Treatment.” Photos by Debi Del Grande.
