The stage looked more like someone’s living room way out in the countryside, with afghans thrown over monitors, rugs, lamps, flower pots and a standing door through which Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog “entered.” This created a casual and warm feeling in the beautiful Orpheum Theatre. Originally scheduled at the Music Box, the audience was now restricted to seats. Crowd surfing and stage diving were not going to happen but that didn’t stop fans from standing the entire time and singing their hearts out. As the band unleashed tunes from its brand spanking new album, Be The Void (Anti-Records), the crowd gave full attention, many sporting Scott McMicken ski hats. Sharing vocal duties, Toby Leaman (bass) and McMicken (lead guitar) wove their distinct voices around each song’s catchy hooks. Frank McElroy (rhythm guitar), Zach Miller (keys), and Eric Slick (drums) never missed a beat. Dr. Dog may have a playful appearance about them, but there is no messing around when they perform. —Debi Del Grande
