“Kelp Girls” dance to Bloody Death Skull
Directed by Mecca Vazie Andrews, THE SERIES IX “AN OCEAN IN FATHOMS” went swimmingly on Tuesday, September 6th. The night opened with a poetry reading and live installation by four top LA-based writers: Kate Durbin, Mathew Timmons, David Shook and Mandy Kahn. Musical performances included folky variety music from Tender, Yellow Red Sparks, RT N’ The 44′S, and Raw Geronimo. Bloody Death Skull used one of the hotels water bed pods as a incubus for a sound/art installation while performance artist, D’Arcy French-Myerson led a trio of sea sirens called “Kelp Girls” in a pool dance piece. Composer/conductor Ali Helnwein played with his new string quartet Zero Machine while ballet dancers performed choreography by Andrews as part of The MOVEMENT Movement. Additionally, the night featured original video art by director Alexandra Pelly of The Masses and Dublab, along with an interactive paper hat-making station led by costume designer/artist Susanna Battin and clothing from OHARA’s new line. The Series’ producer Nicole Disson strikes again tonight, October 11, bringing her 10th collision of L.A. arts to the Standard rooftop.
