IO Echo, A Place to Bury Strangers and The Big Pink kicked off their tour at the El Rey last night to a packed house. They all were sounding tight, dark and brilliant. IO, Leo and crew are magical. APTBS has a revamped set since the last tour with songs from 2009′s release Exploding Head which sounded more mature and equally menacing. The Big Pink was noticeably missing Milo, who lost his passport and is stuck in England. Robbie got the job done fine without him. Leopold was on keys instead of bass and made standing still look violent.

Cool photographs. APTBS were playing to a volume where I could feel it in my chest, but I like that—when you can feel the music. Io Echo were so fucking good that night. And Big Pink were great… I don’t know them well enough to know that their key player was missing, but it seemed like they covered ok
