VIDEO PREMIERE: DEATH VALLEY GIRLS “WEAR BLACK”

October 30th, 2019 | News

Halloween must be the season when L.A.’s Death Valley Girls really come alive. Like the heroic Roky Erickson, they too have a bone-deep reverence for zombies, ghosts, aliens and the other fellow creepy creatures that brought to life blown-out black-and-white monster movies. And that’s the other half of the cast of their new video for their Pandoras-meets-Scientists garage rock seether “Wear Black,” in which a characteristically intense DVG live show splits the stage with a parade of paranormal personalities. It’s an homage, sure, but as singer/guitarist Bonnie Bloomgarden tells us, it’s also a request for help:

“My 1965 Fender Mustang was stolen from me six years ago. I bought her when I was 14 and wrote every song on her. I wanted to mourn her and sing in tribute to her to let her know she is still in my heart, and I believe one day we will be reunited. From now on, I’ll only wear black (guitars) until I get her back. This video by Brendan McKnight has lots of live footage from our last New York show, interspersed with occult imagery to bewitch the guitar back to me.”

Lend your psychic energy to the cause and watch this video as hard and as often as you can, and maybe tiptoe through our funhouse interview with DVG from the archives, too. As fate would have it, last year’s Darkness Rains album—named for a adorable dog, reviewed here—has just been repressed on Halloween-y splatter vinyl, which you can exhume and abscond with here. And they’ll be in Santa Ana on Sunday at the Constellation Room as they rev up an all-over-the-west tour that will bring them home to the Lodge Room on Sat., Nov. 23, and the Casbah in San Diego on Sun., Nov. 24.
