EP PREMIERE: VUG ARAKAS “RESTLESS”
L.A.’s Vug Arakas has kind of outdone himself on his new Restless EP, which is four smoldering songs that sound like early Springsteen gone prime Replacements, each one alive with raw rust-belt soul and down-but-not-out L.A. rock ‘n’ roll resilience. There’s practically a whole potential movie in here about a small-town kid who just won’t give up no matter how much the big city knocks him around. Love won and lost, chances taken and missed, lessons learned and overturned—Restless has it all, and some absolutely winning synthesizer, too. (If John Hughes was still around to make movies, he probably could’ve got three or four title tracks out of this thing.) Recorded in an out-of-time studio looking down on the alternate dimension that is downtown’s St. Vincent Court, Restless releases digitally on CBCV this Friday, and Arakas will be throwing a record release party on Wed., Feb. 28, at Resident with Los Angeles Police Department, Bloodweiser and a special oratory engagement by poet and L.A. RECORD comics-page stalwart John Tottenham—get tickets here! Flyer below.
