VIDEO PREMIERE: TOM BROSSEAU “I LOVE TO PLAY GUITAR”

We gave Tom Brosseau‘s Treasures Untold a beautiful review last month, and now Brosseau sends us this just-as-beautiful video for his Loudon Wainwright III-y original “I Love To Play Guitar,” which delivers on every promise it makes and then some. Treasures Untold is out now and Brosseau performs tomorrow night at McCabe’s before a short but potent tour with Daniel Levitin, and this is how he explains the story behind this song:

“Often people want to know what’s behind my songs. Sometimes those song ideas are hard to describe, but in this case it’s easy. I was raised on a particular musical series called Blues Masters, of which there were several volumes, all of them themed. For instance, Vol. 8 Mississippi Delta Blues was where I first heard Elmore James. His voice and guitar playing, his songwriting felt like something more … an electric phantom leaning in tight to tell me the way out is to get up in the morning and dust the broom. Keep busy, especially in times when you might be feeling peculiar. That way the devil won’t get to you. Some while away by meditating, some take a walk, some work with clay. I use the acoustic guitar like a broom, only it’s not cobwebs and dust I’m sweeping up in the dustpan—it’s the blues.”

As for the video itself, Small Medium Large directors Angela Wood and Ben Guzman (of the wild Triple Chicken Foot?) explain how they decided to go with something powerful, simple and direct:

“When Tom approached us to make a video for a song from his live album Treasures Untold we were immediately drawn to ‘I Love to Play Guitar.’ The melody so beautifully simple, the lyrics and message so personal and universal to guitar players. The world is happening all around us, meditating with music is a respite from it—a place to crawl into and relax and be at peace. We engaged the world and invited people to take part—a call to action via social media and email blasts: ‘You Love To Play Guitar.’ We asked for clips from people of all different skill levels and ages and locales. It was such an incredible thing to receive the response—so many people submitted but thankfully we didn’t have to leave anyone out … except Tom!”
