Second Still's new "Double Negative" is a deft and even desperate post-punk/synth-wave song with a driving Joy Division rhythm section, celestial guitar and plenty of brutalist Berlin atmosphere. It's the kind of thing that fits perfectly between harsh unblinking neon light and the hard cold concrete in the first moments of a blank blue dawn. (Maybe that explains part of the title, which explains the process of turning two nothings into something.) Second Still's Violet Phase album is out Fri., May 3, on Fabrika and Sentimental Records, and you can get it here or here. L.A. trio Second Still‘s new “Double Negative” is a deft and even desperate post-punk/synth-wave song with a driving Joy Division rhythm section, celestial guitar and plenty of brutalist Berlin atmosphere. It’s the kind of thing that fits perfectly between harsh unblinking neon light and the hard cold concrete in the first moments of a blank blue dawn. (Maybe that explains part of the title, which explains the process of turning two nothings into something.) The tension lets up in the unexpected second movement, but this isn’t a song that gently fades away. Instead, it finishes with a deliberate smash-cut stop—all the better to make space for the return of grim reality, says bassist Alex Hartman:

“‘Double Negative’ is a fast synth-driven track that builds in intensity and culminates in a minute-long outro. The song underscores Second Still’s departure from the guitar and bass driven post-punk of their first three releases, and the bands move toward a more cinematic approach to songwriting for Violet Phase. The lyrics for ‘Double Negative’ are about a come down from ecstasy. The serotonin is spiraling, and you realize you’re stuck in the same boring life you began your night with. You can’t fully enjoy yourself, let your guard down, or remember the people you just spend the last four hours with. This is a theme song for negative people.”
