His last single "Used Cars" was some delirious Dolls/Joneses/Stones-es glam punk, but solo debut Ask Again Later and new single "Any Other Nite" is ultra-pure power-pop heartbreak a la the "Shake Some Action" Flamin Groovies or (especially / heavily / lovingly) Teenage Fanclub, whose Bandwagonesque-esque Byrds-reborn vibe is all over this. Longtime rock ‘n’ roll lifer Garett Godard is also known as Gary With A Circle Around The A, and also also-known-as that guy with the wild style and the wilder sound from Personal and the Pizzas, King Tuff and more. His last single “Used Cars” was some delirious Dolls/Joneses/Stones-es glam punk, but solo debut Ask Again Later and new single “Any Other Nite” is ultra-pure power-pop heartbreak a la the “Shake Some Action” Flamin Groovies or (especially / heavily / lovingly) Teenage Fanclub, whose Bandwagonesque-esque Byrds-reborn vibe is all over this. Raspberries/Choir/Shoes people will find this a good fit, too, and so will Tony Molina types. It’d almost be a surprising change in sound, except Goddard (like Stiv Bators before him) has always been a punker with a sweet spot for pop. Remember: Personals and the Pizzas’ b-side “Joanie” was a Gary With A Circle Around The A production, too. The Dates’ Ask Again Later album out now on Burger—track it down here!
