TRACK PREMIERE: J. BONIGNO “TRIP”

June 22nd, 2018 | Listen

Echo Park (via this continent and one more) musician J. Bonigno is about to release the follow up to 2017’s charmingly hazy San Minotauro EP, and here’s the especially charismatic A-side: “Trip” is three minutes of obviously painstakingly crafted pop, starting with a extremely Beach Boys vocal riff and twisty-turning through some cosmic synth, some half-tempo slightly psychedelic soul searching and a spare little acoustic coda. (And all with help from a—possibly synthetic?—Mellotron that just won’t quit.) It’s got heart, hooks and personality—that’s what they used to call a “song,” right? “Trip” and B-side “Driving” are out on the Driving EP on June 29 and you can get it direct (with art by Brooke W.) from J. Bonigno here. He’ll also be playing Lot 1 on Fri., July 6, with Banned from Japan, Ryan Van Gonten (San Francisco) and Teddy Glass (Austin), and then with Blanco Niño at 4th Street Vine in Long Beach on Mon., July 9.
