ALBUM PREMIERE: BRIAN HILL ‘AND THE NOH STARRS’

August 11th, 2017 | Listen

NYC’s Brian Hill was once roommates with Joo Joo Ashworth from Froth in Echo Park, and from that little connection a powerfully L.A. backing band—including Joo Joo, Laena Geronimo of Feels and much more, Sasami Ashworth of Cherry Glazerr and Tomas Dolas from the mighty Mr. Elevator—was born. The result now is the And The Noh Starrs album, an agile and artful album (produced by Dolas) that’s like a Television Personalities or Mirrors take on Lou Reed’s 70s solo work: sarcastic and self-deprecating, yes, and proudly scruffy, sure, but also secretly sort of sincere and affecting, if you let it get to work on you. “Enough’s Enough” and “Who Is Who” offer some Spacemen 3 repetition therapy, and “Oh Please” borrows a little of that Tiger Mountain Eno urgency, but Hill’s deadpan no-bloat no-bs (unless it’s funny bs) philosophy goes right back to NYC 1976, and the longform “Sister Ray”-style closer “The Chase” is like almost some kinda graduation ceremony, as in: let’s honor what we’ve learned this far before we split up and face the world. It’s smart, sharp and potent music, made by people who’ve listened to their record collections carefully. The Noh Starrs album is out Fri., Aug. 18, on Modern Sky U.S.A., and Hill and his Noh Starrs are headlining a nicely curated residency every Monday this month at the Bootleg, with Pinky Pinky, Shannon Lay, Janelane and more all set to make appearances.
