I'm not sure if this is an error on the part of the person transcribing the interview or the person being interviewed, but the song mentioned in the response of the first question is "Poor Ellen Smith," not "Poor Alan Smith." This song was based on a real murder in 1894. Many traditional murder ballads were passed down by word-of-mouth and had time to split into several different versions over time, but not this one. It was late enough in the genre to be recorded and published almost immediately after being written.
