Michael Yonkers Band “The Answer”

Where do you all live now?
Joey Stevens (vocals/guitar): I reside in the SGV—specifically in Alhambra. Itaru lives in Echo Parque.
What was the first show you ever played as a band?
About two years ago we played the end of the year party at Cal Arts. It was our first show with the band name and everything.
What’s the weirdest show you ever played?
Weirdest show we ever played would be this hockey bar that was next to a cemetery in Rhode Island called “The Penalty Box.” We drove up there from NYC, had to bring our own PA, got to the spot, found two grandpas hunched over drinkin’ and buff bartender who ran the spot and couldn’t give much of a fuck. It was cool. We left our mark.
Who was the first person you ever sold a record to?
I can’t recall who exactly was the first, but the guy that sticks out in my mind the most is one of our die-hard fanatic fans who has a tendency to throw bills at us when tipsy. He’s got a big heart. I was happy to see how stoked and grateful he was when I showed him the EP.
What song do you like to play last in your set and why?
We have a song that we usually always play last. One for the lovers, or those between desperation and hope. The slow finger-picking metal threads seems to soothe and leave the night with a sleepy smile, which I think is deserving for all the hard-working folk we love.
If you could cover one L.A. band’s song, whose would it be and why?
That’s a trickkkky tricky. If I had an ultimate choice, I’d attempt to gather an organist, a guy who can play 6 string bass, a chorus of kids, teen girls and old boys for background vocals to work out our own version of “Soul Kitchen” by the Doors.
What was the last song everyone in the band listened to together?
“Flaxophone” by Edan Davey.
What is the best album that everyone in the band owns a copy of?
The Best of The Everly Brothers.
What would you buy if we gave you $600 and why?
I’d go to Home Depot to buy six hundred dollars worth of lady bugs, and then set them all free at our next show. Itaru said he’d buy a vintage Gretsch three-piece kit.
What’s the best record any of you scored for $1?
The Playboy Jazz All Stars 2 vinyl set from 1957. Itaru got the self titled Sublime album.
