If you’ve gone to shows in Long Beach between the years of 1999 and 2046, you’ve probably seen the Thingz at least twice. A punky-poppy LBC institution, this is their fifth album, and it has the kind of oddball, wordplay-rich, B52s-esque humor you’ll expect if you’re a fan, like on the song “Lichen Love,” which is exactly what the title implies it’s about. But I love the recent addition of the vintage keyboard sound–going garage was a good move for these guys, and the songs seem to have more spark and bite than some of their stuff did when they were a trio. Hell, “Thingztrumental” sounds wonderfully similar to the biker-y surf sounds of bands like the Bomboras, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that.
