(from Family Tree available now from Whispering Pines)
Oh, shit! Whispering Pines are a five-piece country rock band from Silver Lake that have just self-released their debut album, Family Tree. It’s fantastic. The album is very Southern and rootsy, and authentic in a way that music hasn’t felt since the Allman Brothers and Rolling Stones were writing their best albums. Naming themselves after the song by the Band, Whispering Pines have put together an amazing album with the help of engineer and co-producer Jason Soda (Everest, Watson Twins, Slydell). There are countless amazing guitar tones, riffs and soulful vocal melodies that leave little doubt this band is the real thing. Put this in the car stereo on the way to Joshua Tree or the Grand Ole Echo, and you’re going to find screaming keys, sliding guitars, and a warm harmonica all fitting tightly into these well-composed tunes. The tracks “Mirror Woman Mirror Man” and “Crazy Mama” in particular have been getting some extra love from me, as I play them over and over on my stereo and in my mind. You’d be wise to catch one of Whispering Pines’ live gigs around L.A. or pick up Family Tree at the local record shop. There aren’t too many self-released debut albums of this quality coming out these days.
